The historic water tower and park grounds

The Prospect Park Water Tower was designed by city engineer F.W. Cappelen and completed in 1914. The tower held 150,000 gallons and served the neighborhood until 1952; it is now used for storage.

The tower was locally designated for its exterior in 1980 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board records that the site was formally named St.

Anthony Heights in 1908, then renamed Tower Hill in 1909. The board had acquired the park after a neighborhood petition in late 1905 and accepted a purchase proposition in 1906.

On the grounds, paved walking trails lead through the park to an overlook with views of Minneapolis. The park’s amenities also include a drinking fountain and tennis court. The park board describes the steep terrain as one reason the grounds have remained primarily for passive recreation.
