The Weisman Art Museum is a University of Minnesota campus museum at 333 East River Road, Minneapolis, on the East Bank. It began as the University Gallery in 1934 and has been housed in Frank O. Gehry’s building since 1993. Its collection contains more than 30,000 works of art.

The museum’s north-side visitor entrance is the key detail to keep in mind as you approach. The building is part of a larger university setting; a University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus visit can pair the museum with other campus stops.

How do you get to the museum from Roseville?

How do you get to the museum from Roseville?

The museum is on the University of Minnesota’s East Bank campus, and transit or campus parking can help you reach its north-side entrance.

Metro Transit buses and the Green Line run through campus. If you take the Green Line, exit at U of M East Bank Station and walk west along Washington Avenue S.E. for about four blocks. Coffman Memorial Union comes first; the Weisman is next. Use the Metro Transit Trip Planner to plan a bus or train route.

The University identifies East River Road Garage at 385 East River Parkway as the primary parking option and Washington Avenue Parking Ramp at 501 S.E. Washington Avenue as a backup.

From East River Road Garage, take the ramp elevator to plaza level and exit onto Coffman Memorial Union Plaza. The museum is to the left of Coffman, with its main visitor entrance on the north side.

Planning time for a museum visit

Allow time to find the north-side entrance and check gallery and exhibition details before you arrive.

Strollers are permitted in the galleries, but large bags and backpacks must be left at the Visitor Services desk. You may take photographs without flash and video in permanent collection galleries; some traveling exhibitions prohibit artwork photography, with signs marking those areas.

For a separate Minneapolis outing, Bohemian Flats Park riverfront access offers a change of setting from the campus galleries.
